Threat to public payphones
in the Taunton Deane area
The Community Council for
Somerset has been alerted by local media coverage and information
received by Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) from British Telecom
(BT) that Taunton Deane is threatened with losing a number of its
public payphones.
BT state that 99% of homes now
have a phone at home and 85% have a mobile phone. They also state
that of the 61,792 public payphones in Great Britain 60% no longer
cover their costs. BT have reviewed payphone usage and are trying to
"re-align the public payphone provision more closely to the reducing
demand that still exists".
BT are using the period from
now up until 2 July 2008 as a consultation period.
TDBC will collate any
responses that you wish to make. Please ensure that any response you
wish to make to the removal of any of the listed phone boxes is
returned to: Jane Smythe, Taunton Deane Borough Council, Deane
House, Belvedere Road, Taunton, TA1 1HE by Wednesday 25 June 2008.
Please note that TDBC is
simply coordinating the response to BT's consultation, it will not be
able to answer queries on their behalf. A full list of the
telephones that BT propose to remove is listed (below). Full guidance

Campaigning: some helpful hints and “dos”
and “don’ts”
Don’t
 | Have petitions. It’s one bit of paper and
doesn’t have impact. |
| Be general. You need to be specific and local. |
| Send the information to a general response

| Ignore your Parish council, District or County
Councillor |
| Forget your MP |
| Think that the closing date of the
consultation period is the end of the game. |
| Forget that the local authorities may have to
approve the proposals. |
| Ignore the media |
| Be nice |
Do
| Use individual email or individual letters |
| Be local. How many people in your community
don’t have mobile phones; how many people rely on their home phone
and would be lost (potentially in danger) if it was out of action;
how many accidents/incidents over the past 2 years have there been
on your road which have had to be reported etc etc. Build case
studies. |
| Try to find out which named individual or
committee is making the decision (your MP might be able to help with
this) and, if you can, find out his or her email address to which to
send your individual emails. |
| Also send, for public bodies or private
companies, your emails or letters to the chairmen of the board. They
will hate receiving anything “difficult.” |
| Use your elected councillors to promote your
cause and to raise it at council meetings and with their national
political contacts. |
| Ask your MP to raise this in parliament and to
add his or her weight to your lobbying effort. |
| Find out when and by whom the decision will be
made. Focus your final lobbying splurge for the day before the
decision is actually made. |
| Find out at what meeting such approvals might
be given. Lobby the chair and members of that group and/or turn up
at the meeting and put your case succinctly at the public question
time (the shorter time the better to retain sympathy). |
| Use Somerset Sound, Orchard FM and the local
newspapers, also the day before the decision is to be made use
national radio phone-ins (radio 5 Live etc) to highlight your case
or programmes where listeners can text in comments. Make it
difficult for the organisation to decide against you. |
| Be cynical. |
