Thatch

Cover of the first copy of Thatch in the Winter 1978The Community Council for Somerset's Magazine for Rural Communities

Thatch has been landing on doorsteps and desks since 1978 - having evolved from a hand-typed booklet to today's glossy magazine (as depicted on the photos shown).  An editorial team of staff and volunteers ensure a balanced blend of features.  Contributions are welcomed from colleagues, external organisations and community groups; subject to editorial control.

We are proud of our magazine and want to encourage people to support it.

What's it all about?

Thatch is produced by the Community Council for Somerset on a quarterly basis.  It is an important way to share information and news, recognising the achievements of vibrant communities and local champions.

Thatch helps us to acknowledge the support of funders and is one of the ways we try to raise the profile of the Community Council for Somerset and promote our mission.

Feedback from our 2008 Social Accounts shows that the most popular Thatch features are Community Projects (85.2% of respondents), followed closely by Village Hall news, our own project updates and News in Brief.

Thatch has traditionally been produced in hard copy only.  However, responding to feedback (69.8% of our 2008 Social Accounts respondents), we now produce "highlights" of each issue in electronic format.  View the Winter 2008 Thatch Highlights (pdf format)

How can you get hold of a copy?

Cover of the 98th Edition Thatch winter 2008Thatch has traditionally been distributed free of charge to a range of people and organisations. This is now set to change, however, following a review of our mailing lists and cost implications.  We want to ensure that the 'right people' receive it; whilst keeping an eye on costs. We have therefore decided that we can no longer distribute the magazine free of charge to non subscribers.  From Summer 2008 onwards Thatch will only be sent to committees, individuals and organisations that subscribe.  This will help us to target the contents to suit a more focussed readership.  Recognising that it is an important way to keep everybody updated on projects and rural news, Thatch will still be available at doctors, dentists, and some village shops and pubs.

If you would like to continue receiving Thatch and you are not currently a subscriber then please contact us for further information.
