The Community Council for Somerset has been asked by West Somerset and Sedgemoor District Councils to support communities to respond to EDF Energy’s proposals for a new nuclear power station and associated development of worker accommodation, park and rides and freight consolidation centres. EDF Energy’s consultation period closes on 4 October. EDF will then submit their proposals to the government’s decision making body, the IPC (Infrastructure Planning Commission), at the end of the year. Without the IPC’s approval EDF will not be allowed to build the new power station.
By clicking on links from this page you will be able to find out more about what communities have been saying to us about EDF’s proposals – and you can also fill in a questionnaire to give us your views on how the proposals may impact on your area. We will send a report summarising community comments to the District Councils to inform their own representations to the IPC. IMPORTANT - This is NOT EDF’s own consultation, or instead of it. It is to provide unbiased and independent advice to communities and as means to be able to feedback from communities to the District Councils. EDF’s proposals for a new nuclear power station at Hinkley also include associated off-site developments in other areas such as Williton, Cannington and Bridgwater. These include developments such as; worker accommodation, freight consolidation depots, park-and-ride areas, a bypass and changes to Combwich Wharf.
Earlier this year EDF consulted the public about their initial proposals. The Community Council held Community Planning Days in those areas affected by the proposals. For further details about community comments made at those Community Planning days and to download a pdf document of the Full Report click here.
EDF revised their proposals and put these out for public consultation until 4 October. Through July and August 2010, the Community Council are running Community Support meetings open to any member of public. At these meetings transport, planning and environmental consultants will be present so people can sit down with them in an informal, neutral setting and discuss their queries and concerns about EDF’s Stage 2 proposals. For further information about the Community Support meetings including dates, times and venues click here.
– Another important way that you can feedback your thoughts to us about EDF’s Stage 2 proposals is to complete our online questionnaire. For the Questionnaire, click here. You may also download and print the questionnaire and return it as a paper copy to us at the Community Council for Somerset.
The most frequently asked questions that people have asked at these meetings have been compiled and answered with input from technical consultants and planners and are available to see by clicking here.
