A fully renovated community run hall in the heart of the Somerset Levels, near to St Andrews Church and Barrow Mump. Aller Village Hall is available for hire all year for daytime or evening events.
The historic village of Aller is set in the heart of the Somerset levels, 2 miles from Langport on the A372 towards Bridgwater.
The village Hall is situated in the High Street and easily accessible; it is well proportioned at 17.5 meters by 6.4 meters. A major refurbishment was completed in June 2003 and now provides: disabled access, a modern well equipped kitchen, tea settings for 48 and seating at tables for 100, much improved heating, lighting, ventilation and insulation and new toilets (including one for the disabled). It has a public entertainment license for 195 persons.
Known affectionately by locals, as the hut, the first building on this site was a galvanised and timber shed which World War 1 veterans erected in the early 1920s to accommodate the Aller Village Club (this was a social club separate from the Aller Friendly Society).
In 1983, after much local fundraising and management by a sub-committee of hte local parish council, coupled with the extremely kind donation of the land by the Mitchell family, plans for a new hall were drawn up. The hall was completed in 1985 for a cost of £13,500 (including grant aid of £10,000).
There are many stories behind this adventure and many seem to recall hours spent scraping bitumen off the reclaimed parquet flooring, but perhaps the best thing was the sense of community that was gained by so many people pulling together for a common goal. This was especially visible at the wrecking party held in The Hut the night before it was finally demolished.
The village hall was set up as a charitable trust and was designed for village use, at a minimal cost. Coupled with the effects of inflation over the years and the exponential rise in the cost of insurance and maintenance, the committee has had to raise the cost of hiring the hall. Although this is a cause for regret, we hope that the new refurbishments and the range of new activities that will be on offer will more than compensate.
