Transport Schemes & Partnerships:

Transport is one of the most critical issues of concern in rural areas. It impacts on people's access to employment, education and quality of life, on the viability of rural businesses, and on the character of the countryside itself. Transport is integral to all themes of the Community Council for Somerset's work. The Community Council is a member of the Transport 4 Rural Somerset.

Many people cannot drive, due to financial constraints, disability or age. Some may also be stranded in their homes if the household car is in use. Many people feel they have to buy cars because of a lack of alternatives, even if they find it difficult to afford to do so. Some may simply not wish to use their car so often. For these people, an alternative service which provides access to shops, work or leisure can improve their quality of life and maintain a vibrant community.

What is SLINKY?

The SLINKY services have been developed by Somerset County Council’s Integrated Passenger Transport Unit and are supported or funded by Somerset County Council, the District Councils, The Department for Transport, Strode College, the Job Centre Plus and Transport for Somerset.

They offer a flexible, Demand Responsive service and can be used for a variety of journeys, below are some examples: Shopping, visiting friends, access to farmers markets, appointments, transport to local facilities or day classes. Transport to a local place of interest or a day trip out. A one way journey, where Public transport can not provide the journey or where it is not suitable.

What is Community Transport?

Community Based Accessible Transport in Somerset operates where other suitable transport is not available. The schemes offer different types of transport to people in areas where there is little or no Public Transport, or where, for a number of reasons, it is inaccessible to them. Accessible Transport services are provided for shopping trips, Health appointments, social trips, access to clubs and day-centres, access to Public Transport links and to community facilities, etc.

Follow this link for more information on Community Transport schemes within Somerset http://www.somerset.gov.uk/somerset/ete/passengertransport/community/

What is a Community Car Scheme?

Community Car Schemes usually provide services for the residents of a particular village or Parish.  Some larger Community Transport Groups also offer Community Car Schemes, often covering a District area.  There is also a charge or donation for the service.

Public Transport information

We also produce a Somerset Rail Guide, which details all train services operating through the County along with information about the West Somerset Railway.

For the most up to date information please contact Traveline  on 0871 200 22 33*.

(* Calls provided by BT will be charged at 10 pence per minute at all times. A call set-up fee of 6 pence per call applies to calls from residential lines. Mobile, business and other providers' charges may vary)
